A princess lived in an enchanted kingdom. She had everything her heart desired and she was loved by all who knew her. Her life was blessed and happy.

Then the princess discovered that something was missing. She didn’t understand how she could feel so ungrateful, but she knew that she was missing something important; something that money couldn’t buy. It made her sad.

She looked over all her kingdom to find it, but it was not there. She searched all the land and the land roundabout. She found nothing to fill the emptiness.

She tried to live without it, but it was no use. She simply could not rest. She felt hollow. She had a hole in her heart, and nothing she could find could fill it. She left her home to search for the missing part of her, not to return without it.

One night she was awakened by a small voice calling to her. She sat up in bed and found herself looking into the face of a tiny fairy.

The fairy was the size of the princess’s thumb. She was lovely and glowed with a white light. The fairy smiled at the princess and said in a tiny voice that was rather quiet and hard to understand,

“My voice is quite small but there’s no cause to fear. The more that you listen the better you’ll hear.

“I know what you seek and I know you can win, but to find it you must look not out, but within.

“There are things you must do and you simply must wait. But with patience and hope things will turn out just great.

“You choose what you’ll be and you choose where you’ll go, but I’ll help when I can and in time you will know.

“You begin when you choose and you chose what you do, but, here, I will give you you’re very first clue:

“The harder you try the more you succeed to give of yourself to another in need.”

With that the fairy vanished and the princess was left alone again. She didn’t understand, but she felt hope growing in her heart.

The next day, the princess decided to return to her home and see the people she loved and thought perhaps to serve them. She thought that this might be what fairy had in mind. She was welcomed with open arms, but she didn’t see that any member of her family needed her aid.

She began to feel discouraged, but then she asked her father, the king, if anyone might need her help. He smiled and said that there was a need for a teacher in the village school. It was a small school with only ten children attending, but they were wild children and the village could not seem to keep a teacher. The king seemed to think that she was just what they needed. The princess was doubtful, but she accepted to opportunity to serve her people.

She found that teaching was an occupation that suited her, to a point. The children were wild and hard to manage, but through much patience and endurance the time passed quickly. The princess found her job difficult and draining, but rewarding.

The children came to respect and love her and the villagers praised her highly. Thus one year passed. When it came time for the school to close she found that she missed the children and frequently visited them.

The princess was now one year older and wiser, but she found that the ache was still there and, in fact, had grown considerably. The year had passed quickly and happily, and she knew that she was a better person for it, but it was not enough. The princess began to hope for the fairy’s return.

The fairy appeared that night. This time the fairy didn’t have to call to the princess to wake her. The fairy’s presence alone was enough. The little white fairy sat on the princess’s knee and smiled. When the fairy spoke now her voice seemed clearer and easier to understand.

"You have done very well, and it’s time for more clues. I can give you advice, but you still have to choose.

“Your feet on the ground and your head screwed on tight will keep your life balanced and help things go right.”

With a glittering puff of white smoke she was gone.

The princess knew that she was rather forgetful and found it hard to accept responsibilities. She decided to work on this by studying the lessons given her by her tutors and helping her servants around the castle.

She increased her studies and managed to earn her way into one of the greatest universities in the land. She learned many things and through time developed many of her talents that she wouldn’t have otherwise. She began to feel the thirst for knowledge that comes with diligent study.

When at home the princess made an effort to help her parents without complaining. Then she began to try to help around the castle without being asked. One day she discovered that she enjoyed the busy work of cleaning and cooking meals. It was unusual, but as her parents permitted it, the servants said nothing.

One day as she sat peeling potatoes her mind wandered back to the fairy and the ultimate goal she had to fill the empty place in her heart. The ache remained and indeed had increased so much the more. There wasn’t a day now that passed that did not include a moment to pause to sigh.

When the last potato was peeled and washed the tiny fairy appeared before her and danced a little as she sang a song to the princess, who could now understand her very well.

“You’ve strengthened your heart. You’ve strengthened your mind. And though time moves so slowly, you’ll find it is kind.

“Unless you know pain you cannot know joy. And the things that you’ve learned you’ll find ways to employ.

“The hole in your heart is still growing, I know. It’ll make a good place for a new seed to sow.

“Be patient and wait, and just open your heart. It’s empty and ready, let sorrow depart!”

And the fairy was gone before the princess could ask what she meant.

Chapter 4 : Happily Ever After

As the princess continued to fill her days with happy busy activity, a young prince came to visit the kingdom. They fell in love and were married. She found that the hole in her heart had been filled with love and she was able to give him a heart full of life and gifts that would bless them both.

When the princess, now a queen, held her first born child in her arms for the first time, the tiny white fairy appeared and laughed as she sang a new song to the child and mother. Her voice filled the whole room.

“Your heart is now full of a love that is real. It’s not just a word or the way that you feel.

“It’s the things that you do and the things that you know. It’s the things that you reap are the things that you sow.

“It’s through patience and faith that most all things can be. It was your strength and courage that helped you to see.

“Don’t lose what you’ve learned and then teach to your son, when you think that it’s ended, it’s only begun.

“I’m only a messenger, whisper, and voice. I’ll help when I can, but it’s always YOUR choice!”
