Before intergalactic farmers harvested the population of the earth, they carved whole buildings and everyone in them out of the ground and scattered them, like seeds, on earthlike planets across the galaxy. Soon after Ray arrived at work, everything suddenly shuts down and everyone quickly discovers that they are no longer where they should be when they see a binary star rising in what was the western sky. The survivors must decide who is the best choice to lead them, and Ray is inadvertently tested and chosen. After several incidents that leave thirteen people dead, Ray decides that he must be on his own and with guidance from a voice speaking in his head, he takes the chance to join a birthing colony of alien telepaths called the Drassen. He discovers that the leader of the colony, the 'High One' as she is called, chose him to help her in an unusual way. He is shown what has become of Earth, seven hundred years after he was forcibly taken from it and he knows there is no other choice but to stay and live with these gentle people; something that the High One was guiding him toward. She protects him from everything except himself as he grows closer to her. The High One has much more in mind for him as he is swept up her plans when they travel to her home world to challenge a paranoid Queen for the Drassen throne, and stop the farmers from harvesting them all.
